Diamond Machining has been an integral process at MRC Optics since the company was founded in the early 80’s. At that time, MRC designed and manufactured several air-bearing, flycutting machines to support their manufacturing processes. Since then, MRC has added aspheric diamond machining capability, additional flycutting capacity, and has emerged as an industry leader in diamond turned components for commercial industry, military and aerospace customers. Our capability is recognized as one of the most advanced in the world. There are several advantages to diamond machining over conventional optical fabrication techniques. Diamond turning can produce complex geometries that are not possible using conventional optical polishing techniques, as well as achieving accuracy and repeatability. In addition, there are many materials that are extremely difficult to polish that can be easily diamond machined.
With regard to optical assemblies, diamond machining enables the designer to incorporate mounting surfaces and alignment features into the workpiece to produce “snap-together” optical assemblies.
